50 Miler Recommended Gear Checklist

 

In car during travel to/from destination:

q       Comfortable travel clothes

q       Change of clothes and shoes for after the hike

q       Cash for meals, motels, entrance fees

 

Wear on trail:

q       T-shirt

q       Shorts (better if convertible pants with legs zipped off)

q       Wool socks with liners

q       Boots

 

Clothes in pack:

q       Convertible pants (with zip off legs)

q       Long sleeve shirt (sun and mosquito protection)

q       T-shirt

q       Fleece jacket

q       Rain jacket, rain pants

q       Wool socks, at least two pairs

q       Sock liners, at least two pairs

q       Camp shoes:  light weight running shoes or Teva-type sandals

q       Underwear

q       Hats:  one warm one, one sun protection one

q       Gloves

 

Personal gear:

q       Cup, plastic preferred

q       Bowl, plastic preferred

q       Spoon

q       Water bottles or bladder, 2 quarts capacity

q       First aid kit, personal size

q       Mole skin (lots!! – recommend 3 packages)

q       Survival kit, recommend including the following:

o       Water purification tablets

o       Matches

o       Candle (fire starter aid)

o       Mirror

o       1-quart zip-lock bags (2)

o       Extra shoelace

o       25’ lightweight nylon twine

o       Surveyor tape (25’)

o       Stovepipe wire (6’)

q       Matches and/or lighter

q       SMALL flashlight and batteries

q       Map

q       Compass

q       Pocket knife

q       Sun screen

q       Chapstick

q       Toilet paper (about a half a roll minimum) and trowel

q       Toothbrush, tooth paste, soap, etc. (minimal personal hygiene stuff)

q       Whistle on lanyard around neck

q       Sleeping pad

q       Sleeping bag

q       Insect repellent

q       Sun glasses

q       Ibuprofen or Tylenol

q       Medications as needed

q       Nylon rope for hanging bear bag (50’ or more)

q       Bear bag (any bag that will hold food for hanging – could double as sleeping bag stuff sack.

q       Handkerchiefs

 

Optional:

q       Camera and film

q       Radio and extra batteries (these things use one set of batteries per day!!!)

q       Fishing gear

q       Deck of cards, book, etc.

q       Salt tablets if hot weather expected

 

Group gear (share among food group and/or tent mate):

q       Tent

q       Ground tarp

q       Water filter (MUST be recently serviced!!!) with repair kit

q       Stove (with repair kit)

q       Fuel (generally 1 ounce per person per day is more than enough)

q       Two pots, one with lid

q       Measuring cup

q       Biodegradable soap and sponge

q       Collapsible water bottle (2-quart or greater capacity)

q       Optional: dining fly

q       Group-size first aid kit

q       Dinner food as coordinated with food group
